Obiettivi formativi
Is it possible to change people's behaviors, habits and attitudes through design?
The course seeks to answer this question through an analysis of so-called "persuasive technologies" or "behavior change technologies," applications and devices designed to drive people toward certain types of behavior (e.g., healthier, more sustainable, etc.), change their perceptions and beliefs, or increase their motivation.
In particular, the theoretical principles on which these technologies are based (through the analysis of human behavior through cognitive, behaviorist, "subconscious," motivational, social, "game-based," and "research-through-design-based" theories) will be examined, as well as how these principles can be translated into specific design solutions (behavioral data visualization techniques, motivational design patterns, UX dark design patterns, etc.).
The teaching will highlight the link between psychological, sociological and anthropological theories and their immediate implications in information technology design through the analysis of concrete cases. For each approach, examples of interactive systems (e.g., wearable devices, video games and "gamified" applications, data visualization systems) will be analyzed and their strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and risks will be highlighted, including from an ethical perspective (e.g., with respect to approaches that work below the threshold of human awareness).
The teaching, in addition to lectures, will also involve a practical part of group work (through human-centered design techniques) in which students will be required to put into practice what they have learned in class through the concept design of a "persuasive" system.
The course is designed as advanced course of human-computer interaction. Those who have no notion of interaction design or human-computer interaction are asked to contact the professor for some guidance on how to supplement their knowledge to best understand the course content.
Attendance is strongly recommended. Non-attendees are asked to contact the professor.
