Students with some knowledge and understanding of the historical background and political science aspects related to the formation of the European Union will find the course themes more accessible. Some knowledge of the history of religions and international relations may also be useful. The lecturer is willing to adapt certain aspects of the course together with the students, based on students’ interests and study areas, with a suggested preliminary and supplementary bibliography related to the topics discussed. This will be done at the request of the student and on terms agreed upon with the lecturer.

Obiettivi formativi

The objective of the course is to prepare the student to recognize the role of the religious confessions in the process of European unification and in other regional integrations using an interdisciplinary approach. With this objective as a starting point, we will gradually introduce the historical aspects and theoretical, social and political elements which contributed from a confessional point of view to the formation of the European community and to the introduction in its integration model of attributes recognizable in history and religious thought.

Having acquired an outlook on the historical and ideological contribution of religions to the formation of the idea of Europe and its unity, the student will have the opportunity to study in depth certain of the primary topics studied in the first part of the course (see Program 1, 2, 3, 4) by way of a dedicated space open to debate and current affairs topics. The topic chosen for this year, which is reserved for the last part of the Module, deals with "Religion in the European Union" (see Program 5).

The purpose of the Module is to furnish a series of concepts and methodological instruments thanks to which the student will be able to interpret the amount of interrelation between religion and politics in the process of European construction. The student should in addition be able to demonstrate that he or she has worked out, in a personal way, the notions conveyed during the course and that he or she knows how to apply them to real-life cases, which will be developed during the in-depth thematic portion of the course.

It remains an objective of the course that the student be able to interpret the information with independent judgment, as well as develop analytical, communicative and argumentative skills to use during classroom debates, including in the presence of lecturers and experts involved in the teaching.

Teaching will take place in the form of classroom lectures and discussions on the themes which emerge from the course during lessons. The Module foresees the use of slides and other didactic materials which will be made available at the end of the course (Module page, section on didactic materials, website of the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society).

A classroom simulation of a session of the European Court of Human Rights (EctHR) on a question pertinent to the religious themes discussed during the course is planned in order to promote student participation and involvement. Starting with a real-life case, the simulation will be conducted according to the rules of Oxford-style debating. Participation in the simulation will not give students the right to receive academic credits but will be taken into consideration in the final evaluatin at the oral exam.

The students will be urged to take action on the topics developed during the lessons and to develop personal observations and critical analyses about same. They will also be requested to participate actively and to interact with the lecturer and experts involved in the in-depth examination of the "Religion in the European Union".

Attendance is not mandatory, however it is recommended, especially for the first part of the course (see Program 1.2) and for the in-depth section on the "Religion in the European Union" (see Program 5). In order to be considered an attending student, students must attend 36 hours out of the 54 hours of classroom lectures (18 lessons, of which at least 7 will be dedicated to the in-depth study of the "Religion in the European Union"). A calendar of the meetings/lectures dedicated to the in-depth study of this topic will be given to students during the first lesson of the course.

For working students a reduction of the hours required for attendance from 36 to 22 is foreseen (11 lessions, of which at least 4 must be related to the "Religion in the European Union").

1) esame orale come descritto sopra sui testi consigliati (per frequentanti) e il materiale didattico utilizzato durante il corso;

The assessment of results and verification of the knowledge learned by the student and his or her ability to draw on the concepts explained during the lessons in order to develop his or her own autonomous interpretative skills on the discussed themes will be assessed through an oral exam (all students) and a written exam (course attendees).

A) For course attendees, the evaluation will be completed in two phases:

1) the oral exam as described above on the recommended textbooks (for course attendees) and the didactic materials used during the course;

2) a brief written exam on the theme developed during the in-depth examination on the topic of the "Religion in the European Union". The result of the written exam will influence the final evaluation of the student, which will take place during the oral exam.

B) For the “non-attending” students, the evaluation will be done through an oral exam as described above on the recommended texts (non-attendees) and on a series of thematic articles that will be available on the website dedicated to the Module, in the section “Didactic materials.”

Foreign students will be able to request to take the exam in English, on resources in English (please see Recommended texts). The texts and the exam in English must in any case be agreed upon in advance with the lecturer.

Occasionally, the lecturer may suggest optional activities to the students on the themes discussed in the Module, involving the class in seminars, meetings and conferences. Although participation is not mandatory, the recommended activities could be useful in order to acquire a deeper understanding of specific aspects of the course materials. The events could also prove useful in promoting comparison and debate on the current themes which have to do with the connection between religions and European integration.

Included in these supplementary activities, we note a programmed event included in the Jean Monnet Module on the topic “The European Union, Religions and Human Rights”. The one-day roundtable will take place in June 2017 at the end of the course lessons and will be held in two sessions. The second session, which will include a debate on the topics discussed by experts in the first session, will be open to all of the students.

Participation in the optional activities will not give students a right to academic credits.

Programma

1) Approccio metodologico e inquadramento storico-tematico

The Module is divided into five parts.

1) Methodological approach and historical-thematic framework

The first part of the program will concentrate on the role of religions in the political and institutional construction of Europe and, more generally, in the regional processes of integration (Regionalism and New Regionalism). The aim of this first part is that of providing a series of interpretations in order to understand the amount of influence of the religions in such processes, starting with a series of “religious factors” (socio-cultural, ideological, individual, and direct/indirect institutional) and using European integration as a first and primary example.

2) The idea of Europe in the confessional perspective: ideas, models, references and influences

The second part intends to offer an overview on the historical-theoretical sequence of events of European unity from the Middle Ages to contemporary times in relation to the transformation of the European religious world and the perspectives developed within Judeo-Christian culture. The aim of this part will be to show through European religious thought and tradition certain of the cultural, social, legal and political concepts that have most contributed to the construction of a European identity. The course will be facilitated by a series of references to the works of authors whose thinking is conditioned (implicitly or explicitly) by the religious culture and in which is evident attention to the issues of identity and of European unity.

3) Religions and European unification

The third part will be dedicated to more recent history and the contribution of the Churches, political movements and Christian organizations to the European unification project and, later, to the beginning of its integration process. In particular, it will focus above all on the effort of the European Churches in the fight against nationalism and totalitarianism, and the promotion of projects and initiatives in favor of European unification. The main objective is that of bringing to light an ample network of collaboration and projects born before and during World War II through representatives of the religious world and supporters of the political world and European resistance. This part, in addition, will follow post-World War II history, tracing certain of the most significant phases of European integration from the perspective of the Churches, the confessional movements, intellectual environments and Christian Democratic political parties.

4) The Religions, the European Union and international relations

The fourth part of the course will encourage a new and more profound perception of the European model, looking for elements assimilated or recognizable from religious culture in the structure of the European Union. In addition, we will touch upon the connections and relationships between the Churches and religious organizations (the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, Protestant Churches, the Jewish community, the Islamic community, etc.) and European institutions, without omitting other relevant regional/international organizations like the European Council. Finally, we will indicate the positions of the religious confessions in the face of global challenges (terrorism, ecology, immigration, etc.) and in the framework of international relations.

5) Room for a deeper examination: Religion in the European Union: Comparison of Churches and Religious Organizations in the Member States.

The fifth part will offer a general overview of the state of the relationships between the Churches, religious organizations and the State, comparing member countries of the EU. The aim is to identify the degree of influence (collaborative/restrictive) that the religions exercise on the European institutions and civil societies in order to observe their level of participation to the project of European integration. In that sense, the Room will attempt to involve students in order to stimulate debate and constructive discussion on topics such as the proposal to include a reference to Judeo-Christian roots in the European Constitution.

The publication of an e-book containing an interactive presentation of all the topics discussed during the course, with a special chapter dedicated to the topic of the "Religion in the European Union", is expected no later than September 2017. The e-book will be available to students in the section “didactic materials' on this web page.
