Programma
The course will analyze the development of democracy in the sub-continent, from the processes of democratization and democracy consolidation to more recent episodes of democratic crisis. In particular, we will examine the main concepts and theories elaborated to interpret the democratic and authoritarian experiences of the last decades, both worldwide and in the region. We will also review the historical roots of political regimes in the area, and appreciate their relevance for their future performance. Finally, we will discuss the influence of populism on democratic crises and analyze the vicissitudes of a few exemplary countries in both Central and South America, namely Mexico and Venezuela, and review the contribution of local civil society and parties to these political processes.
