Obiettivi formativi
Coerentemente con gli obiettivi formativi del corso di studi, l’insegnamento intende concorrere nel a favorire l’acquisizione degli strumenti critici indispensabili per interpretare ed operare nel mondo politico e nella società contemporanea. Questa finalità è perseguita soprattutto attraverso tre direttrici:
- Comprensione della storicità dei processi sociali e politici, con particolare attenzione alle loro conseguenze (sociali, politiche e etiche) sul tempo presente;
- Potenziamento delle capacità di argomentazione e confronto (in termini di padronanza del lessico, comprensione dei punti di vista altrui, e coerenza nell’esporre le proprie posizioni) in riferimento a grandi temi di rilevanza politico-sociale;
- Maturazione delle capacità di confrontarsi in autonomia, in modo critico e aperto, con fonti scritte di argomento politico-sociale.
Consistent with the educational objectives of the course of study, the course aims to contribute to the acquisition of the critical tools necessary to interpret and operate in the political world and contemporary society. This aim is pursued above all through three guidelines:
- Understanding the historicity of social and political processes, with particular attention to their consequences (social, political and ethical) on the present time;
- Enhancement of argumentation and confrontation skills (in terms of mastery of vocabulary, understanding of others' points of view, and coherence in expounding one's own positions) with reference to major themes of social-political relevance;
- Maturation of the ability to deal independently, critically and openly with written sources on political-social topics.- Oggetto:
Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
Al termine dell'insegnamento lo/la studente dovrà dimostrare:
- una buona conoscenza dei principali autori e delle correnti della storia del pensiero politico;
- una buona comprensione dei testi d'esame, frutto anche di un'attenta lettura autonoma degli stessi;
- un uso consapevole e autonomo delle capacità analitiche acquisite, per affrontare, con lessico appropriato, le grandi questioni della cultura e delle idee politiche e per inserirle correttamente nei quadri storici e teorici di riferimento.
Dovrà inoltre mostrare di:
- Padroneggiare un lessico adeguato allo studio della cultura e delle idee politiche;
- Cogliere le più evidenti connessioni temporali, causali e genealogiche tra visioni politico-sociali di epoche diverse;
- Essere in grado di confrontarsi (in termini di lettura, comprensione e confronto) con testi scritti e fonti primarie di media complessità, anche reperendo in autonomia le informazioni di contesto necessarie a intenderne il contenuto;
- Saper discutere collettivamente intorno a tematiche sociali e politiche di rilevanza per l’attualità, argomentando in modo logico il proprio punto di vista e comprendendo il significato di quello altrui.
At the end of the course the student should demonstrate:
- a good knowledge of the main authors and currents in the history of political thought;
- a good understanding of the examination texts, also as a result of careful independent reading of the same
- a conscious and autonomous use of the analytical skills acquired, in order to address, with appropriate vocabulary, the major issues of culture and political ideas and to place them correctly within the historical and theoretical frameworks of reference.
He/she will also have to show that he/she
- Master a vocabulary appropriate to the study of culture and political ideas;
- Grasp the most obvious temporal, causal and genealogical connections between socio-political visions of different periods;
- Being able to deal (in terms of reading, comprehension and comparison) with written texts and primary sources of medium complexity, also autonomously finding the necessary contextual information to understand their content;
- Being able to discuss collectively social and political issues of relevance to current affairs, logically arguing one's own point of view and understanding the meaning of that of others.- Oggetto:

Prima parte:
Il pensiero politico occidentale
La prima parte del programma offrirà una panoramica su alcune delle più influenti riflessioni della storia del pensiero occidentale in ambito politico e sociale. Dopo una breve discussione delle principali categorie politiche provenienti dal mondo classico (polis, nomos, aristocrazia, oligarchia, democrazia, tirannia), le lezioni si concentreranno sul pensiero politico e sociale di età moderna: La Boétie, Hobbes, Locke, l’età dell’assolutismo e dell’illuminismo, Montesquieu, Rousseau, la Rivoluzione francese, Constant, Tocqueville, Marx, Weber.
Seconda parte:
Perché si obbedisce?
La seconda parte del programma intende condividere con le/gli studenti le riflessioni e le categorie relative a uno dei problemi classici del pensiero politico: quello sul fondamento (individuale e collettivo) dell’obbligazione politica, nonché del conformismo sociale. Il programma verterà in particolare su: E. de la Boétie, Discorso della servitù volontaria (da leggere integralmente; ampie parti verranno lette e discusse a lezione) e F. Dostoevskij, I fratelli Karamazov (da leggere obbligatoriamente solo i due capitoli indicati in bibliografia). Gli/le studenti dovranno inoltre leggere e studiare autonomamente un libro a scelta tra le quattro opzioni (A, B, C, oppure D) riportate in bibliografia.
Si invitano le e gli studenti a leggere con estrema attenzione la sezione “Testi consigliati e bibliografia”: è questa a fare fede in dettaglio per il programma di esame.
Part 1:
Western Political Thought
The first part of the programme will provide an overview of some of the most influential reflections in the history of Western political and social thought. After a brief discussion of the main political categories from the classical world (polis, nomos, aristocracy, oligarchy, democracy, tyranny), the lectures will focus on the political and social thought of the modern age: La Boétie, Hobbes, Locke, the age of absolutism and the Enlightenment, Montesquieu, Rousseau, the French Revolution, Constant, Tocqueville, Marx, Weber.
Part two:
Why do we obey?
The second part of the programme intends to share with students reflections and categories relating to one of the classic problems of political thought: that of the (individual and collective) basis of political obligation and social conformity. The programme will focus in particular on: E. de la Boétie, Discourse of Voluntary Servitude (to be read in full; large parts will be read and discussed in class) and F. Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov (only the two chapters indicated in the bibliography must be read). Students must also read and study independently one book of their choice from the four options (A, B, C, or D) given in the bibliography.
Students are urged to read the section "Recommended texts and bibliography" very carefully: it is this that will be used in detail for the examination programme.- Oggetto:
Modalità di insegnamento
L'insegnamento si svolgerà attraverso:
- didattica frontale;
- discussione collettiva di temi connessi agli argomenti delle lezioni;
- lettura e analisi in classe di alcuni testi classici della storia del pensiero politico.
Tenendo conto degli obiettivi formativi dell’insegnamento, una parte dell’insegnamento sarà dedicata alla lettura, alla discussione e al commento di un testo classico della storia del pensiero (il Discorso sulla servitù volontaria di E. de la Boétie). Alle e agli studenti sarà richiesta di volta in volta, in preparazione a tali lezioni, la lettura preventiva di brevi sezioni del testo, e – soprattutto – la disponibilità a intervenire in modo attivo in aula nell’ambito della discussione del testo stesso.
Teaching will be conducted through:
- frontal teaching;
- collective discussion of topics related to the lecture topics;
- in-class reading and analysis of some classic texts in the history of political thought.
Part of the teaching will be devoted to the reading, discussion and commentary of a classic text in the history of thought (E. de la Boétie's Discourse on Voluntary Servitude). Students will be asked from time to time, in preparation for these lectures, to read short sections of the text in advance, and - above all - to be prepared to intervene actively in the classroom as part of the discussion of the text itself.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
L'accertamento dei risultati avverrà in due fasi. Una prova scritta, composta da domande a risposta multipla, che avrà per oggetto i capitoli del manuale oggetto di studio. E in seguito, per chi avrà conseguito almeno la sufficienza, un ampio colloquio orale. Durante quest’ultimo, oltre agli autori studiati (parte manualistica), verranno discussi i testi studiati e analizzati, sia in classe sia in autonomia: la discussione partirà normalmente da un passo particolarmente rilevante dei testi letti, e verterà soprattutto sulla loro contestualizzazione all’interno dell’opera.
Al colloquio orale è necessario portare con sé anche copia fisica (anche in formato fotocopia ove consentito) dei testi studiati per l'esame (manuale escluso).
The assessment of the results will take place in two stages. A written test, consisting of multiple-choice questions, which will cover the chapters of the textbook being studied. And then, for those who have obtained at least a pass, an extensive oral interview. During the latter, in addition to the authors studied (manual part), the texts studied and analysed, either in class or independently, will be discussed: the discussion will normally start from a particularly relevant passage of the texts read, and will focus above all on their contextualisation within the work.
At the oral interview you must also bring along a physical copy (also in photocopy format where permitted) of the texts studied for the exam.

Il corso sarà affiancato da un seminario di lettura collettiva (1h a settimana). Il testo letto nel seminario sarà i I fratelli Karamazov di Dostoevskij (solo i due capitoli citati nel programma).
Il seminario è del tutto facoltativo, e ha una funzione duplice: consentire un ulteriore approfondimento delle tematiche trattate a lezione; e offrire un’occasione di potenziamento nella lettura autonoma di fonti scritte del passato a tema storico-politico.
Per chi decide di frequentare il seminario, si richiede frequenza costante (gli incontri saranno in tutto 9) e partecipazione attiva.
The course will be complemented by a group reading seminar (1 hr per week). The text read in the seminar will be Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov (only the two chapters mentioned in the programme). The seminar is entirely optional, and has a twofold function: to allow further study of the topics covered in the lecture; and to offer an opportunity for independent reading of written sources from the past with a historical-political theme. Those who decide to attend the seminar are asked to attend as constantly as possible (there will be 9 meetings in all) and to actively participate.
