The following general guidelines should aid students in preparing for the "Prova del Lettorato di Lingua Inglese". Passing this test is a prerequisite for the final Linguistica/Lingua Inglese exam. Students will be evaluated on the following items.

1. A reading comprehension exercise of an authentic text related to current affairs and/or the social sciences. Questions may be multiple choice, true/false or short answer.

2. A cloze exercise (i.e., fill in the blanks with one appropriate word to complete a text).

3. A series of exercises covering the following language items:

1. Verb tenses (structure and use)

• Present and Past Simple
• Present and Past Continuous
• Future Tense and future forms
• Present Perfect Simple and Continuous
• Past Perfect

1. Question formation (question words, subject/object questions in all tenses)
2. Modals (obligation, permission, possibility…) i.e., can, could, must, have to, need etc. and their structure and use in different tenses, non-modal verbs/expressions with similar meanings
3. Conditional forms - zero, first, second, third and mixed conditionals
4. Reported speech
5. Passive voice (all tenses), with or without an agent, including sentences with 2 objects
6. Adjectives / adverbs - comparatives & superlatives

Students taking the exam as "non frequentanti" must sign up on the CPS website in the two weeks prior to the exam. The time allotted for the exam is 90 minutes. Dictionaries, notes, electronic devices etc. cannot be used. A sample test with solutions is available on the Lettorati - Inglese link at www.didattica-cps.unito.it.

Students can prepare for the exam using any grammar books (intermediate plus level) available on the market. The use of a workbook + key is recommended for practice. Reading material can be drawn from American or English dailies and/or magazines that can be purchased from newsagents in town or downloaded from websites.

For information about preparing for the second-year Lingua Inglese or Linguistica exam, please contact your course professor. Students at the Dipartimento di Culture, Politica e Società are divided up by degree course and should consult the webpages for the degree for the name of their English professor.

Bachelor degree students who intend to take the Linguistica/Lingua inglese as non-attending (NF) students must have already passed the intermediate level English Lettorato test (either passing a L3 course test or the equivalent NF test), after which they need to meet personally with the professor of their degree course to recieve the exam program. Post-graduate students (Laurea magistrale) should follow the same procedure.
