Course admission requirements

An intermediate-level knowledge of English is required to adequately follow the course. Therefore, in order to attend classes, students must have passed the intermediate-level English lettorato (Lettorato 3) test or be attending the Lettorato 3 course.
We recommend that students take the Lettorato 3 test (either as attending or non-attending students) during their first year, or in the first semester of their second year.
Carefully read the online pages and FAQ document on English lettorato courses and tests: from www.didattica-cps.unito.it , go to the top bar and select Studiare>Lettorati di lingua>Inglese>Informazioni Generali>Lettorato di lingua inglese.
Students with an English language certification corresponding to a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages may access the Lingua Inglese course directly, without taking the Lettorato 3 test, provided that:
1) they earned their certification within the last three years prior to the month when they intend to take the Lingua Inglese exam – older certificates will not be accepted.
2) they send the teacher a copy of the certificate by email and wait for her confirmation regarding its acceptability.

Obiettivi formativi

  • Una competenza linguistica a livello intermedio, o B2 del Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (sia scritta, sia parlata);
  • La capacità di leggere un testo scientifico in lingua inglese;
  • La capacità di prendere appunti;
  • La capacità di analizzare e comprendere le idee principali di un testo – in particolar modo, di testi afferenti al proprio campo di specializzazione – ad. es. su tematiche politiche, economiche e sociali;

Educational goals

The main goal of the course is to provide students with a set of basic tools from English linguistics that will allow them to access resources produced in English within the fields and disciplines characterising their degree course. Students will be able to access and elaborate such information through critical and personal thinking.

In order to achieve this goal, students must have:

  • An intermediate level of English, corresponding to a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
  • The ability to read scientific texts written in English;
  • The ability to take notes;
  • The ability to analyse and grasp the main concepts of a text in English – particularly, of texts about topics concerning their own disciplinary fields as well as political science, economics or social sciences.
  • The ability to reformulate a text/present a scientific argument in a logical and consistent way, through spoken as well as written production.

Developing such skills will be useful to make valuable contributions in professional interactions, especially in disciplinary contexts related to their degree course.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Expected learning outcomes

Students will have to demonstrate that they have fully acquired and can critically apply knowledge of the course content, concerning both linguistic concepts and other subjects related to their degree course.

At the end of the course, students will have developed a greater awareness of communicative strategies employed in the contexts analysed throughout the course. They will also be able to contribute to the writing and editing of outputs concerning the fields of knowledge which characterise their degree course.

  • 36 ore di lezione (febbraio-marzo 2021, orario lun-mar-mer 10:00-12:00), dove verranno affrontati I punti del programma descritti sopra;

In particolare:

All lectures are in remote mode on the teacher’s Webex classroom. They will all be given in English except for the first meeting which will be dedicated to a general description and analysis of the course.

Students will receive notification about access to the lectures. We advise you to check the Moodle page regularly (See “Go to Moodle” at the bottom of the page).

Please note: even though not mandatory (if you consider the subjects and contents proposed), we strongly advise you to attend the lessons.

The course is made up of:

  • 36 hours of regular lectures (from February 22nd to March 31st 2021, Mondays to Wednesdays from 10 am to 12 noon) during which the main topics of the course will be covered in depth;
  • 30 hours of supplementary lessons in smaller groups (from 12th April to 12th May 2021, Mondays to Wednesday from 8 to 10 am).

Our supplementary class activities will mainly include presentation techniques and conversation activities, and will help students prepare for their individual presentations dealing with topics associated with the environments of technology and communication. These presentations will all be evaluated in view of the final examination.

All students, both those attending the course and not, will be examined orally.

The attending students who decide to take part in our supplementary lessons will first of all be given some guidelines about how to prepare an oral presentation. Subsequently they will be required to give an individual presentation to their small group (See “teaching modality” above) which will then be evaluated. During the final examination these students will be examined on the course programme but their performance during the above-mentioned presentation will also be taken into account.
