The course has two main aims: (i) to illustrate the interplay between local development and global dynamics (ii) to illustrate case histories of cooperation and development at the local level.

At the end of the course it is expected that the student will be able to analyze analytically and critically the mechanisms that govern the development of the territories. Furthermore, the student is expected to be able to identify and plan local development actions with reference to collective action, cooperation and assessment of the needs of the territories.

Programma
The course will illustrate the differences and overlapping between the "mainstream view" and the "new emerging perspective" on global and local development. The mainstream view is built around three key dimensions: creative class, technological innovation and urban settlements. The new perspective emphasizes the role of new populations, the power of social innovation and the relevance of rural-urban settlements. These topics will be analyzed through the analytical lenses of key concepts such as: collective action, circular economy, foundational economy, cooperation and conflict, social capital and mission-oriented public action. Several case studies of local development facing global challenges or "wicked problems" will be illustrated.
