The course adopts a social history approach highlighting the specificity of this approach and also how it complements other disciplinary approaches in the social sciences. One of the objectives of the course is therefore to introduce students to research methodology.

The development of the ability to read sources critically is another aim of the course.

Lectures will consider aspects of the contemporary world in the context of medium or long-term complex transformations, they highlight the interconnections between the histories of different countries and question the notion of frontier. One the objectives of the course is to stimulate a reflection upon the processes of social inclusion or exclusion and the analysis of citizenship rights and practices.

Students will benefit from taking this course also in the long run, especially if they will be employed in the social or public sector and will be expected to engage in tasks which require an awareness of social change, policies of inclusion and exclusion and citizenship rights. 

Students taking this course will be expected to master the topics examined in the course, to demonstrate a critical approach to the secondary literature and primary sources and to be able to engage with limited research tasks.

The course consist of 72 hours of frontal lesson and and working groups. The attending students should attend at leats two third of the total hours. 

For attending students, learning outcomes will be tested through two forms of assessment: 1) a written exam which focuses exclusively on the content of lectures; 2) an oral examination consisting of a discussion of two texts, to be chosen from the bibliography listed below. The choice of the texts has to be previously agreed with the teacher. Alternatively, attending students may present a written essay in accordance with the guidelines given by the teacher in the work done in groups that complements the lectures, and discuss it  during the oral examination. 

For non attending students, the exam consists of an oral discussion about tree books to be chosen from the bibliography listed below. The choice of the texts has to be previously agreed with the teacher.

These exams will be assessed according to the following criteria: a) the acquisition of the basic expertise; b) the ability to critically reasoning on the subjects of the course.

Erasmus students and other foreign students may choose to be examined in Russian, French or English. 

The course is concerned with forced migrations from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. The lectures will examine different forms of migration and, comparatively, the specificity of forced ones, which are the outcome of expulsions or deportations. We will consider both those responsible for these expulsions and deportations and their victims, the reasons put forward to justify these acts, the way in which they were conducted and their consequences. We will see how the study of these episodes in the past provides useful observations helpful also to analyse similar contemporary phenomena. The second part of the course will therefore be devoted to  forced migrations and refuges in the present time.
