Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento si propone di fornire nozioni avanzate di antropologia sociale concentrando l'attenzione su alcuni temi di ricerca che questa disciplina condivide con la sociologia, la demografia e la storia sociale, al fine di formare gli studenti al lavoro interdisciplinare mediante l'analisi di casi concreti.
In tal modo, le studentesse e gli studenti di Antropologia culturale e etnologia arricchiranno la loro formazione di base su problematiche centrali per questo campo di studi, mentre agli studenti e studentesse di Sociologia (e di altri corsi di laurea magistrale) verrà offerta una prospettiva antropologica su temi quali le trasformazioni della famiglia, i rapporti fra generi e generazioni, le interazioni tra mutamenti demografici, regimi di welfare e diritti sociali e civili.
The course aims to provide advanced notions of social anthropology by focusing on certain research themes this discipline shares with sociology, demography and social history, in order to impart students with the ability to work in an interdisciplinary manner on real-world cases.
Students of Cultural anthropology and ethnology will thus broaden and deepen their basic knowledge of topics that are central to this field of inquiry, whereas students of Sociology (and other second-level degree courses) will be offered an anthropological perspective on such issues as the transformations of the family, the relationships between genders and generations, and the interactions between demographic changes, welfare regimes and social rights.

Grazie alle lezioni che aprono le due parti del corso si acquisiranno conoscenze avanzate relative allo studio antropologico della famiglia e della parentela e conoscenze di base di carattere demografico pertinenti al tema del corso.
Le lezioni saranno integrate da incontri seminariali in cui si presenteranno i risultati di brevi ricerche individuali o di gruppo, primariamente bibliografiche ma se possibile anche empiriche: oltre a far meglio comprendere differenze e punti d'incontro tra i metodi e le opzioni teoriche dell'antropologia sociale e della sociologia, questo rafforzerà le competenze interpretative e comunicative di studentesse e studenti e stimolerà un attivo dibattito in classe.
The lectures that open the two parts of the course will enable students to acquire advanced knowledge concerning the anthropological study of kinship and the family and basic demographic knowledge relevant to the issues examined in the lectures.
Lectures will be supplemented by seminars where students will present the results of short bouts of individual or group research, primarily bibliographic but when possible also empirical: besides helping them to detect differences and commonalities between the methods and theoretical options of social anthropology and sociology, this will strengthen the students' interpretative and communicative skills and will stimulate interaction between teacher and students and among students.

La modalità principale di erogazione dell'insegnamento è costituita dalla lezione frontale e incontri seminariali a partire da letture proposte in anticipo dal docente. Ampio spazio verrà però anche lasciato a relazioni da parte di studentesse e studenti in cui verranno presentati i risultati di lavori di gruppo.
Mainly whole class (face-to-face) teaching and seminars starting from readings proposed in advance. However, a sizeable portion of the course is expected to consist of seminars where students (organized in work groups) will present to the class the results of researches carried out on selected topics.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
L'esame sarà orale e consisterà: (a) nell'accertamento delle conoscenze teoriche e metodologiche fornite a lezione e nei testi consigliati; (b) nella verifica delle abilità interpretative applicate a casi o temi specifici, anche a partire dall'esperienza dello studente. Verranno inoltre valutati eventuali percorsi di ricerca individuali o di gruppo.
Per il colloquio di esame gli studenti e studentesse frequentanti dovranno preparare una parte comune, consistente nei temi trattati nelle lezioni e in un testo generale di introduzione all’antropologia della famiglia; potranno poi approfondire temi specifici secondo i loro interessi, attraverso della lettura di uno o due testi a scelta fra quelli sotto elencati (a seconda se devono acquisire 6 o 9 CFU). I testi saranno sostituibili in tutto o in parte con articoli scientifici che saranno presentati durante le lezioni o con le ricerche che gli studenti avranno esposto a lezione.
Gli studenti e studentesse non frequentanti dovranno integrare la preparazione dell’esame con un ulteriore volume a scelta. Per il resto, le modalità di preparazione del colloquio rimangono identiche a quelle di chi frequenta. L’eventuale sostituzione dei volumi a scelta con articoli scientifici dovrà essere concordata con il docente.
The exam will be oral. The aim is on the one hand to ascertain that the technical and methodological knowledge provided by the lectures has been successfully acquired and that the texts suggested for the exam have been properly understood, and on the other to gauge the student's interpretive abilities as applied to specific cases or topics, possibly starting from the student's experience. The results of individual or group research work will also be evaluated.
For the exam those students who have attended the lectures (in the classroom or online) will have to study a common part, consisting in course notes and an introductory volume on family anthropology. In addition, they will have to elaborate on specific themes according to their interests by reading one or two texts chosen from those listed below (depending if they have to acquire 6 or 9 credits). It will be possible to partly or totally replace these books with texts (mostly journal articles) on specific topics that will be analysed in the lectures and made available online, and by participating in the work groups.
Those students who have been unable to attend the lectures (or have preferred not to do so) will be expected to study, instead of the notes from the lectures, another volume selected among those listed. For the rest, the other parts of exam are identical of those who attend.

Lo studio delle famiglie e della parentela in prospettiva storica e comparativa
L'insegnamento si propone di esaminare, in prospettiva storico-antropologica, il ruolo della parentela nelle società contemporanee e i mutamenti delle forme di famiglia nel XX secolo o attualmente in corso, in relazione soprattutto alla prima e alla seconda transizione demografica. Saranno esaminati temi, autori e dibattiti che hanno caratterizzato lo studio delle forme di famiglia e parentela dagli anni ’70 a oggi, così come casi di studio specifici provenienti da Europa, America Latina, Nord America, India e Africa. L’insegnamento si propone anche porre in rilievo le connessioni fra antropologia, storia, demografia e sociologia nello studio contemporaneo delle trasformazioni di famiglie e parentela.
L'insegnamento consisterà principalmente in lezioni tenute dal docente, ma sono anche previsti incontri seminariali in cui le studentesse e gli studenti (organizzate/i in gruppi di lavoro) presenteranno i risultati delle loro ricerche;
L'insegnamento si suddividerà in due parti:
1) una prima parte di 36 ore, sufficiente per gli studenti e studentesse di corsi di laurea magistrale per i quali l'esame di Antropologia sociale prevede l'acquisizione di 6 CFU. I temi trattati in questa parte saranno:
- Temi, concetti e strumenti per lo studio delle famiglie e della parentela.
- Nuclei domestici e forme di famiglia.
- Transizioni demografiche e trasformazioni socio-culturali delle famiglie.
- Prospettive di genere nelle relazioni familiari e di parentela.
- Famiglie, reti di parentela, assistenza e sistemi di welfare.
- Nuove forme di famiglie nelle società contemporanee.
2) una seconda parte di 18 ore, obbligatoria per le studentesse e gli studenti di Antropologia culturale e etnologia e di altri corsi di laurea per i quali l'esame di Antropologia sociale prevede l'acquisizione di 9 CFU. I temi trattati in questa parte saranno:- I nuovi studi di famiglia e parentela in antropologia.
- Forme di “relazionalitá” e legami sociali.
- La costruzione socio-culturale della parentela.
Family, and kinship in historical and comparative perspective
This course is aimed at examining, in historical-anthropological perspective, the role of kinship in contemporary societies and the changes undergone by the family in the twentieth century and over the past two decades, mainly in relation to the first and second demographic transitions.
It will examine themes, authors and debates that have characterized the study of family forms from the 1970s to the present day, accompanied by case-studies from Europe, Latin America, North America, India and Africa. The course also aims to highlight the connections between anthropology, history, demography and sociology in the contemporary study of the transformations of families and kinship.
The course will mainly consist of lectures, but a sizeable amount of time is expected to be devoted to seminars where students (organized in work groups) will present the results of their researches.
The course will be subdivided into two parts:
1) A first part consisting of lectures and seminars comprising a total of 36 hours, sufficient for students who need 6 credits. Topics covered in this part include:
- Themes, concepts and tools for the study of families and kinship.
- Households and family forms.
- Demographic transitions and social and cultural transformation of families.
- Gender perspectives on family and kinship relationships.
- Families, kinship networks, assistance and welfare systems.
- New families forms in contemporary societies.
2) A second part consisting of lectures and seminars for a total of 18 hours (which will focus of the notions of kinship and "relatedness" and on the processes of socio-cultural construction of kinship), required in addition to the first part for students needing 9 credits. Topics covered in this part include:
- The new family and kinship studies in anthropology.
- Forms of relatedness and social ties.
- Social and cultural constructions of kinship.
