Lorenzo Kamel ha ottenuto un M.A. biennale in Israeli Society & Politics alla Hebrew University di Gerusalemme e un dottorato di ricerca in Storia all'Università di Bologna. In precedenza ha conseguito una laurea di vecchio ordinamento in Filosofia presso l'Università di Roma La Sapienza.
È professore associato di Storia Contemporanea (M-STO/04) all’Università degli Studi di Torino e titolare dei corsi in India, Sub-Saharian Africa and the Middle East: Entangled Histories; Contemporary History in a Comparative Perspective; History of the Middle East and North Africa; Storia Contemporanea E.
È membro del collegio dei docenti del dottorato in Global History of Empires, responsanbile della contemporaneistica della Biblioteca di Storia G. Tabacco e membro e docente presso la Scuola di Studi Superiori “Ferdinando Rossi” dell'Università di Torino.
È inoltre direttore delle collane editoriali dell'Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) e, dal 2014, direttore scientifico del “New-Med Research Network” (finanziato dalla Compagnia di San Paolo, dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, dal German Marshall Fund of the United States e dall’OSCE).
Ha ottenuto incarichi di insegnamento e ricerca in numerose università in Europa, Stati Uniti e Medio Oriente, tra cui la Albert-Ludwigs-Universität di Friburgo— dove è stato Marie Curie Experienced Researcher per un anno — e il Center for Middle Eastern Studies dell’Università di Harvard, presso cui ha afferito per 4 anni, 2 dei quali come Resident Postdoctoral Fellow (con la sponsorship di Roger Owen e Sara Roy).
Ha ricevuto l'Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale del MIUR come professore ordinario nel settore concorsuale 14/B2 Storia delle Relazioni Internazionali delle Società e delle Istituzioni Extraeuropee (D.D. 1532/2016) e, come professore associato, nei settori 11/A3 Storia Contemporanea (D.D. 1532/2016) e 10/N1 Culture del Vicino Oriente Antico, del Medio Oriente e dell'Africa (D.D. 1532/2016).
Nel 2014 è stato nominato Responsabile di ricerca per l'area del Medio Oriente e del Nord Africa all'Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI).
È membro di “Eumenia – Jean Monnet Network” ed è stato coordinatore IAI del progetto Horizon2020 MENARA ('Middle East and North Africa Regional Architecture'), partecipando inoltre, con diversi incarichi, a numerosi altri progetti europei, inclusi “EU-LISTCO” (Horizon2020) e “MedReset” (Horizon2020).
Ha organizzato, nella veste di direttore scientifico, circa 15 convegni internazionali in 10 diversi paesi (Libano, Tunisia, Iran, Giordania, Israele/Palestina, Italia, Inghilterra, Cipro, Grecia, Turchia).
Ha pubblicato 15 libri (8 come autore) su temi legati alla Storia Globale, al Medio Oriente e al Nord Africa, inclusi "Napoleone e Muhammad Ali. Medio Oriente e Nord Africa in epoca tardo moderna e contemporanea (Mondadori), "Ripensare la Storia" (Le Monnier), "The Middle East from Empire to Sealed Identities" (Edinburgh University Press), "Imperial Perceptions of Palestine: British Influence and Power in Late Ottoman Times, 1854-1923" (I.B. Tauris) e "Arab Spring and Peripheries: A Decentring Research Agenda" (Routledge).
È autore di oltre trenta articoli su riviste accademiche, tra cui The British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Peace and Change, Euroasian Studies, New Middle Eastern Studies, Passato e Presente, Storicamente, Oriente Moderno, Mediterranean Politics, The International Spectator, Contemporanea, Nuova Rivista Storica.

Ha ricevuto il "Palestine Academic Book Award" 2016 (sezione accademica), il "Premio Internazionale Giuseppe Sciacca" 2010 e il Fritz Thyssen Grant presso l'Università di Bologna, dove ha tenuto corsi di Storia contemporanea comparata.
Ha tenuto seminari e corsi in diverse università nazionali e internazionali e ha vissuto per anni in diversi paesi del Medio Oriente, trascorrendo inoltre lunghi periodi come visiting fellow alla Birzeit University (Ramallah), alla Bilkent University (Ankara), alla ‘Ain Shams University (Cairo) e alla Hebrew University di Gerusalemme.
Ha tenuto lezioni e interventi su invito della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, dell'European External Action Service (EEAS), della Scuola Superiore dell’Amministrazione dell’Interno, della Scuola di Formazione del Comparto Intelligence e del Ministero degli Affari Esteri.
È direttore di tre collane editoriali (incluse "All History is Contemporary History" e "Global Politics", entrambe per la casa editrice Peter Lang) e peer reviewer per lo European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant “The Study of the Human Past”), Routledge (collana libri Storia), International Affairs (Chatham House), Eurias e numerose altre istituzioni, case editrici e riviste accademiche.
È di frequente ospite in programmi e speciali di approfondimento (Rai 1, Mediaset, Sky, RadioRai 1, ANSA e Radio 24 - Il Sole 24 Ore per quanto concerne l'Italia) e collabora con il Gruppo Mondadori nella veste di docente nel programma "Lezioni di Storia".
