Programma

This course will be looking at the main facts and theories about economic development. The focus will be initially broad, trying to understand what matters to economic growth, what explains differences in economic development across countries, and how countries have been able to escape poverty. Trade and industrial policies, as well as the role played by structural transformation will be discussed as main instruments, and the cases of China and other Eastern Asian countries will be used as case study to complement this part. Next, we will be looking at some of the main causes of underdevelopment. Poverty, inequality and the environment, together with the role of institutions, will be mainly analyzed under a microeconomic perspective.

A detailed list of topics follows below:

  • Understanding (measuring) development (Ch. 1-2-3)
  • The macro level:
    • Economic growth (Ch. 8 + papers)
    • Structural transformation (Ch. 8+ papers)
    • Industrial policies (papers)
    • Trade policies (Ch. 7 + papers)
    • FDI and Development (papers)
    • Global Value Chains and Development (papers)
  • The micro level (topics):
    • Poverty and vulnerability (Ch. 5 + papers)
    • Inequality (Ch. 6 + papers)
    • Labour/migration (Ch. 12 + papers)
    • Institutions (Ch. 20 + papers)
    • Aid (Ch. 19 + papers)

Chapters in parenthesis refer to the recommended book. The book is mostly intended to understand the basic concepts. For most of the topics, I will also discuss some additional materials, whose details will be provided in the course’s page.
