Obiettivi formativi
The Laboratory “Expo and Forward” deals with the theme of the Great Events, especially considering Olympic Games and Universal/International Expositions. The main object of the Laboratory is the analysis of their different effects, as urban regeneration, traditional place marketing oriented to obtain investments,
visibility and international repositioning, new image and identity: this process deals with the “external” and “internal” publics (Kotler). In these cases, the communication plays a strategic role.
High attention will be devoted to tourism (comparing Expos and Olympics), and to the long term Legacy. This topos deepens the legacy of the events, that can be planned carefully or at random, and can be brief and long term, material and immaterial. The main objective for the students is to be autonomous in searching sites and sources on mega events, and to be able to prepare a power point and-or a paper, and to present the results in a speech- Oggetto:

The studens are expected to demonstrate a good knowledge of the arguments deepened during the Laboratory. This kind of work will improve their skills in dealing with case works, evaluating the different experiences of cities hosting events, comparing the effects of the events in differet contexts. The presentation of papers and power points will enrich the individual and collective experience of the Laboratory. The examination will be mainly based of the case work, that means the individual presentationsof papers and speeches. The students, presenting papers and power points, will demonstrate their skills in developing arguments and using a specialised set of concepts and theories. The evaluation will be only “approved” or “not approved”.

Programma
The Laboratory “Expo and Forward” deals with the theme of the Great Events, especially considering Olympic Games and Universal/International Expositions.
The main object of the Laboratory is the analysis of different outputs of Mega Events, that can lay on urban regeneration (Barcelona 1992, Athens 2004), international political legitimization (Corea 1988, Beijing 2008), traditional place marketing oriented to obtain investments, new plants and services (Atlanta 1996, Hannover 2000, and possibly Milan 2015), visibility and international repositioning (Lillehammer and Norway 1994, Sydney and Australia 2000), changing-improving the Place’s image (Capetown in the ’90s, Baltimora in the ’80s, Genoa 1992-2004, Valencia 2005, Turin 2006 and 2011): this process deals with the “external” and “internal” publics (Kotler). In these cases, the communication plays a strategic role.
High attention will be devoted to tourism, comparing Expos and Olympics, and to the long term Legacy. This topos deepens the legacy of the events, that can be planned or random, brief and long term, and especially material and immaterial. Recent proposals (Roche 2000) underline the increasing role of the symbolic legacy, that can include cultural heritage, local legitimization and prowdness, know how and skills in managing the events and in the bidding process.
After the event, the new destination of structures and services is an important issue; a comparison between the Expo area and the Olympic Park (where existing) will conclude the seminar.
In the introductory lessons some considerations will face the economic transformations of the modern society, the tertiarization, the impacts on the territory, the tourism complexity and the increasing number of city users, who consume the city and its new offer, also based on the events (at a different scale and life cycle).
Students are expected to produce papers and/or Power Points about cases studies, with attention to cities hosting mega events, or bidding to obtain them, or losing such opportunity (Capetown), or improving their urban quality without events (Bilbao).
The teacher will provide documents, research, web sites.
The Laboratory, after some traditional introductory lessons, will face specific cases of cities and events. The students must attend the lessons, and have to prepare a speech (Power Point, paper or presentation)

Note
The Laboratory will begin on April 11 2016, Monday-Tuesday, h. 12-14, Seminar room 2, Palazzina Einaudi
The teacher will share texts and bibliographies, and will put some documents in the “materiali didattici” (documents for didactics): some of them can be consulted in the previous programmes (especially 2013-2014 and 2014-2015). A complete listing is above attached. The information is clear also in italian: it deals with some texts related to mega events and their legacy, with cases of Olympic Games and cases oF Universal Expos. Some web sites and books deal with Expo Milano 2015 and the post event debate; an interesting source is the AMCA web site, that shares many projects about the re-use of the main area.
