Obiettivi formativi

The course fits the theoretical and applied framework of the ASGIC program. It focuses on the Atlantic world seen as a field of multiple interactions which takes shape and develops in the time span between the Atlantic revolutions and the end of World War II. The major goal is stimulating among students the critical knowledge  of the reasons behind the specificity of the Western world within the global framework, with a strong  focus on the transformation of the United States as post-colonial, national, and imperial player. Other primary goals are the aquisitition of competences the interaction between state and non-state actors across the Atlantic (trade and finance, migrations and diasporas, war and diplomacy), the power relations among these actors,  and the infrastructures of Atlantic interdependence.

A secondary objective is matching the teaching needs of students with different ability to attend the course on a regular basis, thanks to an interactive kind of teaching mostly based on English-language materials.

Students are required to produce an oral presentation on a topic agreed upon with the professor and to discuss it in class, as well as a written paper at the end of the course.

The following points are especially important for the oral presentation: 1) structure (topic, research question, consistency between objectives and results) 2) how the paper is situated within the general framework of the course.

The written paper (approximately 50.000 characters long) will build on the oral presentation. It is important to 1) blend descriptions of events with intepretation based on major historiographical trends and 2) develop the ability to work on primary and secondary sources in a critical and authonomus way. This paper will be discussed in the final oral exam.

Students unable to attend classes are advised to take a two-parts exam (oral with open questions on the standard textbook + oral on the book to be chosen in the bibliography). The exam is aimed at measuring 1) the command of major events and intepretations 2) the ability to engage with events and intepretations in a critical way

Programma

The transformation of the Atlantic world and rise of the American empire, 1776-1945

The course deals with the relation between the transformation the Atlantic system of relations and the rise of the United States as a global player along the 19th and the first half of 20th century.

The origins of such transformations are to be located in the the era of Atlantic revolutions (United States, France, Haiti) that disrupted the early modern Atlantic world. Far from putting an end to transatlantic connections, such revolutionary outbreak laid the bases for a field of interactions of a new kind, which played a major role in the acceletration of contemporary globalization. The rise of the US as a a nwe player played a significant role in this transformation. Consequently, major themes discussed in the course are:

- the crisis of European colonial empires and the rise of new of new polities, out of which nation-states eventually emerged

- the end of the slave trade and slavery and the expansion of agrarian and industrial capitalism

- the transportation revolution and innovations in communication as vehicles of the transatlantic circulation of people, goods, and ideas

- the evolution of system of international relations, traditionally centererd on Europe, into a euro-Atlantic system

- the rise of international organizations and non-state actors (NGOs, corporations, networks of 'experts' etc.) as major players of a global order centered in the Atlantic world
