Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

  • Conoscere le principali teorie e prospettive di lettura delle implicazioni politiche del nesso migrazioni-sviluppo;
  • Comprendere le differenze tra queste diverse prospettive;
  • Descrivere i principali aspetti problematici dei processi migratori in relazione ai processi di sviluppo nelle aree di origine;
  • Individuare le tematiche cruciali per la gestione del fenomeno e la programmazione di politiche che tengano in conto la dimensione dello sviluppo;
  • Cogliere criticamente le rappresentazioni ricorrenti e le retoriche che emergono nel dibattito pubblico attorno al nesso migrazioni-sviluppo;

Knowledge and undertanding
The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the political implications of the migration-development nexus, taking into account the analytical frameworks adopted by contemporary studies on international migration.
In particular, by the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Know the main theories and approaches to the political implications of the migration-development nexus;
  • Understand the difference between the different interpretative frameworks and appraoches;
  • Describe the main problematic issues raised by migration in terms of processes of development in the areas of origin;
  • Identify key issues pertaining migration management and the planning of policies taking into account the development dimension;
  • Have a critical understanding of current representations and public discourses concerning the migration-development nexus;
  • Apply relevant analytical tools in a variety of professional and scholarly contexts.

Critical Thinking
The politological approach to the migration-development nexus of this course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage with complex issues, formulate judgements and develop intervention strategies – even on the basis of limited or incomplete information. At the end of the course students will be able to interpret available data (at local, national and international level) and compare these to mainstream narratives on the topic.

Communication skills
By the end of the course, students will acquire the ability to communicate and discuss relevant issues with teachers and colleagues, using appropriate terminology and correctly applying the concepts and approaches discussed during the course. In order to support this, the course sessions will be dynamic and participatory, requiring the active engagement of students.

Learning skills
By the end of the course, students will acquire a critical approach to the complex issues related to the migration-development nexus and will be able, in the future, to undertake further study and updating on these themes in an autonomous and effective manner, developing research approaches and professional interventions as appropriate.

dell’insegnamento.

The course amounts to 36 hours of lecture-time, comprising 18 lectures of 3 hours. The first 6 lectures will be articulated into a presentation of the lecturer, supported by the use of Power Point, and then group discussions. The remaining 6 lectures will be based on students' presentations. Hence, the teaching method used implies a high level of interaction between
teacher and students, and a regular, engaged attendance. Further details on the structure of the taught sessions will be provided at the beginning of the course.

For non attending students, the assessment of the learning outcomes will take place at the end of the course and will entail a written exam consisting of 4 open questions with a predefined response space. The final overall mark (on a 30-point scale) will be awarded on the basis of the questions, which will be announced during the examination. There is no oral examination for this course. The duration of the written exam is 1 hour and a half.
The topics under examination will reflect those presented in the main handbook of the course (see details below) and included in the programme. The objective is to ascertain the understanding of the course topics, to assess the acquisition of skills and the ability to apply these when addressing specific questions. Particular attention will be devoted to the correct use of terminology, the clarity of writing and argumentation and the ability to logically connect the various elements discussed in the exam.

Attending students will be assessed at various times during the course. The assessment will consider participation to group works, with the preparation of at least one - or more - ppt presentations and a short essay on a topic to be agreed with the teachers. Both oral presentations and the written essay will contribute to the final mark.
