Obiettivi formativi

The course contributes to the formative project of the program both by discussing the major tools provided by the history of euro-american relations, and in particular by the trajectory of American internationalism, to interpret the international dimension of the contemporary world, and by enabling the students to make use of these tools in critical ways.

Furthermore, the course is aimed at providing the students with transversal competences useful to activate these abilities in different context and for different goals

Students are required to produce an oral presentation on a topic agreed uopn with the professor and to discuss it in class, as well as a research paper at the end of the course.

The following points are especially important for the oral presentation: 1) structure (topic, research question, consistency between objectives and results) 2) how the paper is situated within the general framework of the course.

The research paper (approximately 50.000 characters long) will build on the oral presentation. It is important to 1) blend descriptions of events with intepretation based on major historiographical trends and 2) focus on a specific research question and develop the ability to work on primary and secondary sources in a critical and authonomus way

Students unable to attend classes are advised to take a two-parts exam (written with open answers on the standard textbook + oral on the book to be chosen in the Bibliography). The exam is aimed at neasuring 1) the command of major events and intepretations 2) the ability to engage with events and intepretations in a critical way.

Programma

History of American internationalism: evolution and crisis, 1917-2008

History of American internationalism: evolution and crisis, 1917-2008

The course IS HELD IN ENGLISH and provides an in-depth, critical look at the history of American internationalism, that is the paradigms and policies underpinning the global hegemony of the United States in the 20th century. Its time span starts with the emergence Woodrow Wilson’s grand design during World War I and ends with the first decade of the new century, when such hegemony is undermined by the financial crises and the rise of new global issues and actors.

The focus on the trajectory of American internationalism sheds light both on transatlantic relations and, especially after World War II, on global issues and North / South relations. Recent, groundbreaking historiographical trends (ex. global and transnational history) will be discussed in depth.

The course is structured in three parts devoted to the following macro-themes:

  1. the origins and institutions of American internationalism and the Euro-American roots of “embedded liberalism” (weeks 1-2-3 / SCINT students)
  2. the evolution of American internationalism and post-World War II global challenges: the crisis of empires, decolonization, development (weeks 4-5-5 / SCINT and AGIC students)
  3. the crisis of American internationalism after the fracture of the 1970s: globalization, human rights, collective security (weeks 7-8-9 / SCINT and AGIC students)
