Obiettivi formativi
Students will be provided with the theoretical and methodological tools necessary to better analyze the political dynamics and institutional developments of the Mashreq region.
The historical and political trajectories that have shaped this part of the Middle East differ, in part, from those of North Africa (the Maghreb). Overall, these trajectories appear to be more closely linked to the spread of powerful ideologies that are particularly relevant to understanding the region.
By examining key issues and pivotal countries that have been central to these processes, the course aims to:
– To provide students with theoretical and analytical knowledge useful for navigating regional and international relations. This goal is pursued through a combination of lectures and guided discussions.
– To develop students’ critical thinking skills, enabling them to understand the region’s dynamics beyond stereotypes and distorted representations. This objective is achieved through the analysis of a variety of materials, including online databases, think tank publications, documentaries, and video resources. It is further supported by the integration of students’ reading reports and oral presentations.
Da un punto di vista formativo l'insegnamento si propone di fornire strumenti teorici e metodologici che consentano agli/alle studenti/esse di analizzare le dinamiche politiche e gli assetti istituzionali della regione del Mashrek. Le traiettorie storiche e politiche che hanno caratterizzato lo sviluppo di questa regione del Medio Oriente si differenziano in parte da quelle della regione del Nord Africa (Maghreb) e risultano maggiormente connesse al diffondersi di ideologie particolarmente rilevanti per la comprensione dell’area. Attraverso una disamina di alcuni dei principali nodi e paesi della regione che sono stati al centro di tali processi, l'insegnamento ha l’obiettivo di:
- fornire una serie di conoscenze teoriche e analitiche utili agli/alle studenti/esse per orientarsi nelle relazioni regionali e internazionali dell’area. Tale obiettivo è perseguito attraverso la combinazione di lezioni frontali e discussioni guidate.
- Sviluppare negli/nelle studenti/esse capacità critiche che permettano loro di comprendere le dinamiche di area al netto di stereotipi e rappresentazioni falsate. Tale obiettivo sarà perseguito attraverso lo studio dei processi storico-politici che hanno caratterizzato l’evoluzione della regione ma anche tramite l’analisi di materiali legati alla situazione corrente tratti da banche dati, siti internet e altre risorse online (documentali e video). Tale obiettivo è perseguito durante tutta la durata dell'insegnamento anche attraverso la predisposizione di lavori individuali (reading reports) da parte degli/delle studenti/esse e loro discussione.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

Understand the political evolution of the Mashreq region in the contemporary era, as well as broader developments in the Middle East and the international context (knowledge and understanding).

Analyze and interpret these developments through the lens of area studies (knowledge and applied understanding).
Students will also have developed the ability to:

Write concise essays with a strong analytical focus.

Critically deconstruct dominant narratives and stereotypes.
In addition, due to the variety of teaching methods employed (see course structure), students will acquire soft skills valuable for successful integration into the job market—such as teamwork, working under pressure, and leadership abilities.
Al termine dell'insegnamento lo/a studente/essa sarà in grado di comprendere:
- quali sono state le principali evoluzioni politiche della regione del Mashrek in epoca contemporanea e collegare tali evoluzioni alle modificazioni del contesto medio orientale e, più in generale, di quello internazionale (conoscenza e capacità di comprensione).
- come tali evoluzioni siano state interpretate ed analizzate da una prospettiva di area studies (conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicata).
Lo/a studente/essa avrà acquisito le competenze per:
- Elaborare saggi brevi dalla spiccata dimensione analitica.
- Decostruire criticamente narrative e stereotipi.
Inoltre, grazie alle diverse tecniche di insegnamento proposte (lezioni frontali, relazioni di gruppo, dibattito, ecc. - si rinvia alla sezione Modalità di insegnamento), lo/a studente/essa avrà anche acquisito alcune competenze trasversali (capacità di lavorare in gruppi-anche multiculturali, capacità di analisi e sintesi, capacità di leadership, proattività e innovazione, capacità relazionali) fondamentali per un inserimento attivo nel mondo del lavoro (autonomia di giudizio, abilità comunicative e di diversa natura).

In the first part of the course (12 hours), key epistemological and ideological issues underlying the region’s political evolution will be critically examined.
For the 2025/26 academic year, particular attention will be given to the following topics:-
Arabism and Pan-Arabism

Identity and the role of religion
The second part of the course (24 hours) will build on this foundation through the analysis of specific case studies. In 2025/26, the course will focus on the following countries:

Lebanon

Syria

Palestine

Iraq
Nella prima parte dell'insegnamento (12 ore) verranno analizzati criticamente i principali nodi epistemologici e ideologici che hanno caratterizzato lo studio dell’evoluzione regionale. In particolare il programma si concentrerà sui seguenti:
- Arabismo e panarabismo
- Guerra fredda araba
- Settarianizzazione
- Petrolio e dinamiche internazionali
- Identità, confessionalismo e ruolo della religione
Nella seconda parte dell'insegnamento (24 ore), le questioni affrontate nella prima parte del corso verranno lette attraverso la disamina di alcuni casi di studio. In particolare nell’anno accademico 24/25 l’attenzione si focalizzerà sui seguenti paesi:

Modalità di insegnamento
The course adopts a lecture/seminar format. The lecturer will introduce the topic of the day and students are expected to contribute to class discussions. The course will develop in two parts.
In the first part the course's arguments will be discussed together with the students both through lectures and with the help of the readings reports that will be prepared by the students and presented in class individually or in group. The reading reports will be delivered to each lesson to the instructor (via e-mail). The reading list for attending students will be provided at the beginning of the course. The general reading list, for non attending students, will be updated and published here in January 2025. These presentation of the reading reports will facilitate the discussion by helping students to sediment the knowledge acquired and stimulating both oral and written skills (see the section "Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento").
In the second part of the course, the study of some countries will be addressed both through lectures that will introduce them, and through videos and the analysis of specific documents. Students will be asked to produce short critical essays that will contribute to the creation of updated countries' reading lists which can useful to elaborate a research proposal. Students will be invited to agree with the instructor the subject of the short essay (see the section "Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento")
The course, taking place in the second semester. All students interested in attending the course are invited to register on the moodle platform which will be the tool used by the instructor for sharing news and course materials.
L'insegnamento si svilupperà in due parti. Sia nella prima, sia nella seconda parte dell'insegnamento la didattica sarà di tipo misto ma le modalità e le tecniche utilizzate saranno in parte differenti.
Nella prima parte ciascuno dei nodi affrontati verrà discusso insieme agli/alle studenti/esse sia tramite lezioni frontali sia con l’ausilio di letture che per gli/le studenti/esse frequantanti saranno distribute i primi giorni del corso mentre per i non frequentanti saranno aggiornate e disponibili in queste pagine nel gennaio 2025. Per ogni tema saranno predisposte delle reading list che forniranno la base per la predisposizione da parte degli/delle studenti/esse di brevi presentazioni orali individuali e per piccoli gruppi facilitate attraverso la predisposizione di reading reports che verranno consegnati ad ogni lezione alla docente (tramite e-mail). Tali presentazioni faciliteranno la discussione in aula aiutando gli studenti/esse a sedimentare le conoscenze acquisite e stimolando, al contempo, sia le capacità orali sia quelle scritte.
Nella seconda parte dell'insegnamento lo studio dei casi paese verrà affrontato sia attraverso lezioni frontali che introdurranno l’argomento della lezione, sia tramite la visione di video e l’analisi di documenti specifici nonché la predisposizione dei reading reports. In questa seconda parte gli/le studenti/esse saranno invitati a produrre brevi saggi critici che contribuiranno alla creazione di reading list-paese aggiornate e che potranno costituire il punto di partenza per l’elaborazione della tesi di magistrale. Gli/le studenti/esse saranno invitati a concordare con la docente l’oggetto del saggio breve (si veda la sezione sulle modalità di verifica dell’apprendimento).
L'insegnamento si svolgerà nel secondo semestre. Tutti gli/le studenti/esse interessati/e a seguire il corso sono invitati/e a registrarsi sulla piattaforma moodle che sarà lo strumento utilizzato dalla docente per la condivisione di avvisi nonché dei materiali del corso.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Attending students
Students will be assessed on reading reports (45% of the final mark) and on a 1 research essay (55% of the final mark). The reading reports are to be send via email before every lecture. The reading report will be no longer than 500 words and it is the summary of the main points the author(s) wish to convey.The reading list for attending students will be provided at the beginning of the course, The general reading list, for non attending students, will be updated and published here in September 2025.For the research essay, students are encouraged to choose their own topic with previous agreement from the lecturer. The research essay will be no longer than 5000 words; it should be analytical and not descriptive. The essay must be the student's own work as plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism will be treated very seriously, and in order to avoid suspicion, students should reference their work correctly.
Non-attending students
Students will be assessed on 1 research essay. Students are encouraged to choose their own topic with previous agreement from the lecturer. The research essay will be no longer than 6000 words; it should be analytical and not descriptive. The essay must be the student's own work as plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism will be treated very seriously, and in order to avoid suspicion, students should reference their work correctly.
The essay should be sent by email to the lecturer at least 10 days before the chosen "appello".
Non attending student are asked to register on the moodle platform as the attending students.
Le modalità di verifica dell’apprendimento saranno varie e diversificate.
Frequentanti
Agli/alle studenti/esse verrà richiesto di preparare una serie di reading reports che saranno poi presentati oralmente (individualmente e per piccoli gruppi) che peseranno per il 45% del voto finale. I reading reports non dovranno superare le 500 parole e dovranno evidenziare i punti principali del paper e la tesi dell’autore/trice. La reading list per i/le frequantanti sarà distributa i primi giorni del corso mentre per i/le non frequentanti sarà aggiornate e disponibile in queste pagine a settembre 2025. Inoltre sarà richiesto agli/alle studenti/esse di elaborare un saggio breve che peserà per il 55% del voto finale. Il saggio breve dovrà essere lungo non più di 5000 parole e dovrà intrecciare uno dei temi affrontati nella prima parte del corso con un caso di studio paese. L’argomento dovrà previamente essere concordato con la docente. Il saggio dovrà avere un taglio analitico e non descrittivo. Il plagio non sarà tollerato e verrà trattato con la dovuta severità.
Non frequentanti
Agli/alle studenti/esse verrà richiesto elaborare un saggio breve che dovrà essere lungo non più di 6000 parole e dovrà intrecciare uno dei temi affrontati nella prima parte del corso con un caso di studio paese (si veda programma del corso). L’argomento dovrà previamente essere concordato con la docente. Il saggio dovrà avere un taglio analitico e non descrittivo. Il plagio non sarà tollerato e verrà trattato con la dovuta severità.
Il paper dovrà essere inviato alla docente via email almeno 10 giorni prima dell'appello prescelto.
Gli studenti e le studentesse non frequentanti dovranno anch'essi registrarsi sulla piattaforma moodle.
