Prerequisiti

Il corso comprende tre moduli, (vedere oltre) ed è destinato a due tipologie di studenti/studentesse:
- chi ha frequentato/sostenuto almeno un esame di lingua araba standard in ambito universitario (o affini), cui è dedicato il percorso INTERMEDIO;
- chi possiede una buona preparazione in arabo standard (almeno due o tre esami di lingua araba standard in ambito universitario o affini), cui è dedicato il percorso AVANZATO.


The course includes three modules and is aimed to two categories of students:
- students who have attended/taken at least one examination in Standard Arabic at university level (or related), for whom the INTERMEDIATE TRACK is dedicated;
- students proficient in Standard Arabic (at least two or three examinations in Standard Arabic at university level or similar), for whom the ADVANCED TRACK is dedicated.

OBIETTIVO COMUNE:

  • Offrire, attraverso lezioni, esercitazioni ed esempi, un approfondimento della situazione linguistica dell'arabo standard contemporaneo, nel contesto di temi e questioni relativi dell'Organizzazione Internazionale, con particolare riferimento all'area MENA (Middle East and Northern Africa).

OBIETTIVO SPECIFICO PERCORSO INTERMEDIO:

  • Consolidare la conoscenza linguistica e lessicale di base dell'arabo moderno standard, in particolare nei registri di comprensione orale e scritta.

OBIETTIVO SPECIFICO PERCORSO AVANZATO:

  • Esplorare strategie e abilità per la comprensione e la traduzione di testi specifici della variante di arabo in uso presso il Sistema delle Nazioni Unite

 

COMMON GOAL:

  • Offer, through lectures, practical exercises and examples, an in-depth study of the language situation of contemporary Standard Arabic, in the context of themes and issues related to the International Organisation, with particular reference to the MENA (Middle East and Northern Africa) area.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE (INTERMEDIATE TRACK):

  • Consolidate basic linguistic and lexical knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic, particularly in both registers of oral and written comprehension.


SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE (ADVANCED TRACK):

  • Explore strategies and skills for understanding and translating texts relating specifically to the variant of Arabic in use within the United Nations System.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Al termine dell'insegnamento, studenti e studentesse saranno in grado di:

  • Decodificare la complessità della situazione linguistica odierna dell'arabo; identificare i diversi usi e le varietà di arabo usate all'interno del sistema delle Nazioni Unite, in particolare le sue funzioni di lingua diplomatica, lingua dei trattati, lingua di comunicazione e lingua operativa.
  • Conoscere e utilizzare consapevolmente le strategie e  gli strumenti di lessicografia digitale, traduzione automatica e composizione assistita offerte dall'IA e dalle tecnologie informatiche online. 
  • (Percorso intermedio:) usare le competenze grammaticali e lessicali di base acquisite per affrontare testi reali di bassa/media difficoltà scritti in arabo contemporaneo nella sua varietà di lingua ufficiale ONU. 
  • (Percorso avanzato:) comprendere testi reali in arabo di media-elevata difficoltà; tradurre testi reali di bassa difficoltà dall'inglese all'arabo e viceversa.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • De-construct the complexity of the linguistic situation of Arabic today; identify the varieties of Arabic used within the United Nations system, in particular its functions as a diplomatic language, treaty language, language of communication and operational language.
  • Familiarise with and proficiently use the digital lexicography, machine translation and typesetting strategies and tools offered by AI and online information technologies.
  • (Intermediate track:) use the acquired basic grammatical and lexical skills to deal with real texts of low/medium difficulty written in contemporary Arabic in its UN official language variety.
  • (Advanced track:) understand real texts in Arabic of medium-high difficulty; translate real texts of low difficulty from English into Arabic and vice versa.

Il programma prevede tre moduli, uno COMUNE obbligatorio, gli altri due (INTERMEDIO e AVANZATO) opzionali, conformemente al proprio livello di conoscenza dell'arabo (auto percepito).

MODULO COMUNE

  • Introduzione all'uso delle lingue nelle organizzazioni internazionali; L'arabo come lingua di comunicazione internazionale, e in particolare come lingua ufficiale e di lavoro del Sistema delle Nazioni Unite.
  • L'arabo come lingua UN: analisi lessicale di documenti della comunicazione online:
    1. Organigramma UN; 2. Sustainable Development Goals: Analisi lessicale dettagliata di alcuni SDG in arabo (acquisizione di un lessico specifico).
  • Strumenti di traduzione assistita e automatica: esempi e strategie di utilizzo per la comprensione e la produzione scritta


MODULO INTERMEDIO

  • Conoscenza base e approfondimenti sulle principali strutture grammaticali dell'arabo, in accordo al metodo seguito dai testi consigliati in bibliografia (Mastering Arabic Grammar; Mastering Arabic 2).

 

MODULO AVANZATO

  • L'arabo come lingua UN: Piani di comunicazione varietà di lingua. Analisi dettagliata di documenti esemplificativi dei diversi piani di comunicazione: 1. Lingua di TRADUZIONE di strumenti internazionali (Universal Declaration of Human Rights in arabo, versione corrente e versione "storica"); 2. Lingua di REDAZIONE di strumenti internazionali (CEDAW). 3. Lingua di lavoro dei UN Main Bodies (AG Resolution A/RES/72/252) 4. LIngua di diffusione e comunicazione (Siti internet verie agenzie; pubblicazioni ILO)

 

The programme consists of three modules, one COMMON compulsory, the other two (INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED) optional, according to one's level of knowledge of Arabic (self-perceived).

COMMON MODULE

  • Introduction to the use of languages in international organisations; Arabic as a language of international communication, and in particular as the official and working language of the United Nations System. Arabic as a UN language: lexical analysis of online communication documents: 1. UN Organigram; 2.Sustainable Development Goals: Detailed lexical analysis of some SDGs in Arabic (acquisition of specific lexicon).
  • Computer-aided and machine translation tools: examples and strategies for use in comprehension and written production

INTERMEDIATE MODULE

  • Basic knowledge and in-depth study of the main grammatical structures of Arabic, in accordance with the method followed by the recommended texts in the bibliography (Mastering Arabic Grammar; Mastering Arabic 2).


ADVANCED MODULE

  • Arabic as a UN language: language variety and language switch. Detailed analysis of sample documents of the different communication levels: 1. Language of TRANSLATION of international instruments (Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Arabic, current and "historical" version); 2. Language of DRAFTING of international instruments (CEDAW). 3. Working language of UN Main Bodies (AG Resolution A/RES/72/252) 4. LANGUAGE OF DISCLOSURE AND COMMUNICATION (verious agency websites; ILO publications).

Modalità di insegnamento

L'insegnamento è impartito nel I semestre, attraverso lezioni in presenza per le quali verrà registrata la frequenza:

  • Frequentando in presenza almeno il 75% delle lezioni previste, si potrà accedere all'esame come FREQUENTANTE. 
  • Chi non potrà frequentare o totalizzerà meno del 75% di presenze, accederà all'esame come NON FREQUENTANTE (l'esame scritto e orale sarà approfondito, e volto a verificare anche quelle competenze che i frequentanti invece avranno esercitato durante le lezioni in presenza).

Si fa notare che, dato l'elevato livello d'interazione delle lezioni in aula, non ne sarà possibile la registrazione.   Per tutte/i (frequentanti o non frequentanti) sarà comunque disponibile su Moodle un supporto per l'apprendimento online.

I moduli (vedi sopra in sezione "programma") sono ovviamente aperti a tutte/i (ad esempio, uno studente che segue il percorso INTERMEDIO può seguire liberamente i moduli avanzati, anche se non saranno ovviamente programma d'esame).

Le studentesse e gli studenti che hanno diritto a un trattamento individualizzato sono invitate/i a prendere contatto con la docente all’inizio delle lezioni per condividere le loro specifiche esigenze.

The course is taught in the first semester, through face-to-face lectures for which attendance will be recorded.

  • Attending in-presence at least 75% of the scheduled lectures, you will enter the exam as a attending student.
  • Those who are unable to attend, or who have less than 75% attendance, will take the exam as non attending students (the written and oral exam will be more in-depth, and will also be aimed at testing those skills that the attending students will have practised during the in-presence classes).


Please note that, given the high level of interaction in the classroom lectures, it will not be possible to record them. However,  specific online learning support will be available on Moodle for all (attending or non-attending).

The modules (see above under 'programme') are of course open to everybody (e.g. a student following the INTERMEDIATE TRACK can freely follow the advanced modules, even though they will obviously not be part of her/his examination programme).

Students who are entitled to individualised treatment are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of class to share their specific needs.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

L'accertamento dei risultati di apprendimento sarà verificato attraverso una prova scritta, seguita da una prova orale.

 

The assessment of learning outcomes will be verified by a face-to-face written test, followed by face-to-face or remote verbal examination.

Erasmus students may take the examination in English. For further information, please contact the lecturer.
