Conoscenze antropologiche di base, in particolare una conoscenza delle principali prospettive teoriche e dello sviluppo storico della disciplina. Si ritiene necessaria la capacità di comprendere e usare una terminologia adeguata all'ambito delle scienze antropologiche.

Obiettivi formativi
Temi e argomenti trattati, nonché le competenze e le abilità che si intendono formare, sono congruenti con il percorso formativo del corso di laurea magistrale, ossia formare esperti nelle scienze antropologiche, in possesso di strumenti che consentano di affrontare le diverse problematiche delle relazioni interculturali. In particolare si intende fornire un approfondimento sulle culture e religioni native del Nord America, la loro storia e la situazione contemporanea e una conoscenza di specifiche problematiche teoriche che verranno affrontate durante il corso o che sono discusse nei testi consigliati.
Themes and topics dealt with, as well as the competences and abilities which we have the purpose to form, are coherent with the general degree program, that is to produce experts in the anthropological sciences, having the competence to deal with the different problems of inter-cultural relations. In particular, it is planned to supply an introduction to the Native cultures of North America, their history and contemporary situation and a knowledge of particular theoretical debates dealt with both in the lectures and in the proposed bibliography.

Al termine del corso gli studenti dovranno essere in grado di:
- apprendere e discutere un insieme di conoscenze generali relative all'America indigena, intese nella loro complessità e diversità.
- sviluppare l'analisi di alcuni specifici contesti etnografici dell'America indigena.
- applicare i principali strumenti metodologici della ricerca antropologica.
- integrare l'approccio antropologico con lo studio dei contesti storici e dei processi di mutamento nel sistema socio-politico americano.
- affrontare criticamente la storia di alcuni concetti chiave dell'antropologia americana.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- apprehend and discuss a general knowledge of Native American cultures, taken in their diversity and complexity.
- develop the analysis of specific ethnographich cases in Native American cultures.
- apply the most important instruments od Anthropological research.
- integrate the anthropological approach with the study of historical contexts and the processes of change in the American socio-political context.
- discuss with a critical approach the history of some important concepts in American anthropology.

Lezioni della durata complessiva di 36 ore (6 CFU), svolte in aula con l'aiuto di proiezioni e occasionalmente di documenti video.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Gli studenti frequentanti dovranno scrivere una breve relazione utilizzando i testi indicati ed eventualmente altri indicati durante il corso. Le conoscenze e capacità sviluppate dallo studente saranno poi verificate con un colloquio orale, comprendente una discussione dell'elaborato scritto e domande sui principali temi affrontati durante il corso.
Gli studenti che non frequentano dovranno anch'essi scrivere una relazione su uno dei testi scelti per l'esame, che dovrà essere consegnata al docente una settimana prima dell'appello.
Sarà considerata adeguata la preparazione (con una votazione espressa in trentesimi) se lo studente si dimostrerà in grado di esprimersi con efficacia, impiegando la terminologia corretta. Dovrà inoltre mostrare di saper studiare in modo critico i testi suggeriti e di saperne individuare i punti salienti e le linee teoriche ispiratrici.
Attending students shall be requested to write a brief text utilizing the proposed books or others indicated during the lessons. Knowledge and capacities acquired by students shall also be verified with an oral colloquium, including questions about the main themes dealt with in the course.
Non-attending students shall be requested to write a brief report about one of the chosen texts, which shall be delivered to the teacher one week before the date of the exam.
An adequate preparation shall be judged (with an evaluation scaled until 30) when the students are able to express themselves with efficacy, employing the correct terminology. They have also to demonstrate being able to study critically the suggested bibliography and to identify the salient ideas and the inspiring theoretical viewpoints.

Rituale e mitologia nelle culture indigene delle Pianure nord-americane.Il corso si propone di fornire una introduzione al panorama indigeno nord-americano, focalizzandosi primariamente sull'area culturale delle Pianure. Tale contesto permette di individuare un ambito molto vasto, che spazia dalle rive del Mississippi fino alle Montagne Rocciose e che raggruppa un insieme di popolazioni che presentavano, al momento della conquista del continente, una varietà di modelli socio-economici molto diversi tra loro. La prospettiva comparativa consente di seguire una serie di temi appartenenti alla tradizione orale e alla pratica cerimoniale attraverso questo vasto territorio, individuandone continuità e trasformazioni.
Ritual and Mythology among the Native Plains cultures of North America.
The course has the purpose to supply an introduction to North American indigenous landscape, focusing mainly on the Plains cultural domain. Such a context permits to observe a vast geographical domain, extending from the Mississippi River westward to the Rocky Mountains, which encloses a wide set of cultures that showed, at the moment of the discovery of the continent, a vast array of socio-economic models with a great difference among them. The comparative perspective has the advantage to detect, in this vast territory, a series of common themes, pertaining to oral traditions as well as to ceremonial performance, and to identify continuities and transformations
