Conoscenze antropologiche di base, in particolare una conoscenza delle principali prospettive teoriche e dello sviluppo storico della disciplina. Si ritiene necessaria la capacità di comprendere e usare una terminologia adeguata all'ambito delle scienze antropologiche.


Basic notions of anthropology, with particular reference to the main theoretical perspectives, and to the historical development of the discipline. It is necessary that the student should be able to utilize an appropriate terminology in the context of the anthropological sciences.

Obiettivi formativi

Tra i principali obbiettivi formativi vi sono:

- Migliorare competenze ed abilità congruenti con il percorso formativo del Corso di Laurea Magistrale.

- Formare nuovi esperti in Scienze antropologiche in grado di affrontare le eterogenee problematiche legate alle relazioni interculturali.

- Studiare alcune specifiche popolazioni indigene dell’America settentrionale, tenendo in considerazione specialmente le loro peculiarità culturali e religiose (anche in chiave comparata con Abya Yala). Tutto ciò alla luce di alcune rilevanti problematiche teoriche, sia in chiave storica che contemporanea.

Learning Objectives

The main learning objectives are:

- Improve competences and skills congruent with the educational path of the Master's Degree Program.

- Train new experts in anthropological sciences able to deal with the heterogeneous issues related to intercultural relations.

- Study some specific native populations of North America (also in comparative terms with others indigenous communities of Abya Yala), taking into account especially their cultural and religious peculiarities. All this in the light of some relevant theoretical issues both in historical and contemporary key.

Conoscenza, comprensione e saper fare. Al termine del corso le studentesse e gli studenti frequentanti dovranno essere in grado di:

  • Apprendere e discutere un insieme di conoscenze antropologiche generali relative alle problematiche interculturali e al tema delle minoranze culturali all’interno dello Stato-nazione contemporaneo

 

  • Studiare i principali strumenti metodologici della ricerca antropologica anche attraverso l’eventuale uso di specifiche tecniche etnografiche volte ad approfondire l’indagine di alcune popolazioni indigene dell´America settentrionale.

 

  • Integrare l'approccio antropologico con lo studio dei processi di mutamento geografico, ecologico, storico e sociale.

 

  • (Ri)pensare criticamente lo sviluppo di alcuni concetti chiave dell'antropologia contemporanea.

Knowledge, understanding and know-how. At the end of this course, attending students should be able to:

Learn and discuss a set of general anthropological knowledge relating to intercultural issues and the theme of cultural minorities within the contemporary nation-state

Study the main methodological tools of anthropological research also through the eventual use of specific ethnographic techniques aimed at deepening the research of the native populations in North America.

Integrate the anthropological approach with the study of the processes of geographical, ecological, historical and social change.

(Re) think critically about the development of some key concepts of contemporary anthropology.

Rituali e mitologia nelle culture indigene delle Pianure nord-americane (ed oltre).

Dopo alcune iniziali considerazioni di carattere epistemologico legate alla teoria decoloniale, il corso fornisce un’ introduzione al panorama indigeno nord-americano, focalizzandosi primariamente sull'area culturale delle Pianure. Tale contesto permette di individuare un ambito molto vasto, che spazia dalle rive del Mississippi fino alle Montagne Rocciose e che raggruppa un insieme di popolazioni che presentavano, al momento della conquista del continente, una varietà di modelli socio-economici molto diversi tra loro. Infine, la prospettiva comparata con  altre comunità indigene di Abya Yala consente di seguire una serie di temi appartenenti alla tradizione orale e alla pratica cerimoniale attraverso questo vasto territorio, individuandone continuità e trasformazioni.

PROGRAM

 

Ritual and mythology in the indigenous cultures of the North American Plains (and beyond).

After some initial epistemological considerations related to decolonial theory, the course provides an introduction to the North American indigenous landscape, focusing primarily on the cultural area of the Plains. This context allows us to identify a very large area, ranging from the banks of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, which includes a set of populations that had, at the time of the conquest of the continent, a variety of socio-economic models very different from each other. Finally, the comparative perspective with other indigenous communities of Abya Yala allows us to follow a series of themes belonging to oral tradition and ceremonial practice through this vast territory, identifying continuities and transformations.

Modalità di insegnamento

  • Lezioni della durata complessiva di 36 ore (6 CFU), svolte con l'aiuto di presentazioni, documenti video nonché l’utilizzo dell’applicativo “Padlet”. È prevista inoltre la partecipazione di ospiti esperti sulle tematiche del corso.

 

  • Pedagogia costruttivista. Ogni studente/studentessa partecipa attraverso contributi individuali e di gruppo per approfondire le tematiche del corso. Per questo motivo, ogni contributo è una risorsa per il dibattito a partire dagli interessi della classe.

Teaching methods

  • Lectures for a total of 36 hours (6 CFU) supported by slide presentations, videos and “Padlet” use. Expert guest speakers are also scheduled to participate during the class.

 

  • Constructivist pedagogy. Each student participates through individual and group contributions to deepen the themes of the course. For this reason, each contribution is a resource for debate from the interests of the classroom.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

STUDENTESSE E STUDENTI FREQUENTANTI

 

Per le studentesse/studenti frequentanti, le modalità di verifica dell’apprendimento si baseranno sulla valutazione di:

  1. Brevi contributi di ricerca in gruppo (80% del voto finale);
  2. Partecipazione individuale a lezione (20% del voto finale).
  3. Eventuale esame scritto (opzionale)

 

I brevi contributi di ricerca saranno preparati e discussi settimanalmente dagli studenti a partire dai temi studiati a lezione e saranno realizzati secondo le indicazioni fornite dal docente ad inizio del corso.

 

La partecipazione in classe sarà valutata prendendo in considerazione la capacità della studentessa/studente di partecipare alle attività delle lezioni (in maniera sincrona ed asincrona). Sarà considerata inoltre la capacità di offrire contributi stimolanti per l’arricchimento del dibattito sui temi del corso (anche attraverso l’uso della piattaforma “Padlet”).

Il voto finale sarà il risultato dalla media ponderata della valutazione dei brevi contributi di ricerca più quella data dalla partecipazione in classe.

L'esame scritto (facoltativo) consisterà in un test a risposte multiple ed aperte sugli argomenti più importanti del corso. Verrà considerata altresì la capacità di analisi critica.

ASSESSMENT METHODS FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS

 

For attending students, the assessment methods will be based on the evaluation of:

  1. Short research contributions (80% of the final grade);
  2. Individual class participation (20% of the final grade).
  3. Possible written exam (optional)

 

Short research contributions will be prepared and discussed weekly by little groups of students related to the topics studied in class and will be made according to the directions provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.

Class participation will be evaluated by taking into consideration the student's ability to participate in class activities (synchronously and asynchronously). It will also be considered the ability to offer stimulating contributions for the enrichment of the debate on the topics of the course (also through the use of the platform "Padlet").

The final grade will be the result of the weighted average of the evaluation of the short research contributions plus that given by the participation in class.

The written exam (optional) will consist of a multiple-choice and open-ended test on the most important topics of the course. The ability of critical analysis will also be considered.

 

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS

Non-attending students will undergo a written exam on the dedicated syllabus provided by the professor. For this reason, non-attending students are kindly requested to contact the professor in due time and at least once before the exam.

The written exam consists of a multiple-choice and open-ended test on the most important topics addressed by the course, as well as the abilities to critical analysis.
